Division

Picture
Picture

20 apples divided into 4 groups leaves 5 in each group.

SOOO..... 20 ÷ 4 = 5

To divide means to break into smaller parts.  The number we want to
divide is the DIVIDEND.  Then we must decide how many parts we
want to break it into.  That number is called the DIVISOR.

EXAMPLE 1:   We have 20 cookies to divide - so 20 is the DIVIDEND.   We want to divide them among 4 kids - so 4 is the DIVISOR.  Each child will get 5 cookies and there are none left over.  The answer is 5.

EXAMPLE 2:   We have 7 bones to divide - so 7 is the DIVIDEND.   We want to divide them among 2 puppies - so 2 is the DIVISOR.  Each puppy gets 3 bones and we have one left over, so 1 is the REMAINDER.  The answer is 3 r.1

Now, go to the drop down page under division and review the steps to division.  Then you can play some games!
